Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Medical research has demonstrated that using our own blood cells, accelerates healing and tissue regeneration in all forms of surgery. Specifically, platelets, plasma, and white blood cells are used for this procedure. The protein that is carried by the platelets is the magic ingredient that is being used in numerous private office settings for wound healing and various surgical procedures, including oral surgery.

Affordability

Platelet rich plasma is available at a fraction of the cost of stem cell therapy. Platelet rich plasma has been used widely in human medicine, primarily to promote the healing of musculoskeletal injuries (e.g., tendons and ligaments), but it is now making its way into companion animal medicine.

Procedure

The process is relatively simple:

  • A blood sample is drawn from the patient needing treatment. The patient is sedated and supported on IV fluid therapy during collection.
  • Using special equipment, the blood is spun down until the plasma (the liquid portion of blood) and platelets can be separated from white and red blood cells. The plasma now contains a much greater concentration of platelets than does “normal” blood.
  • The platelets are activated via the addition of thrombin, calcium, or other substances/procedures that stimulate them to release their growth factors (chemical mediators that stimulate the healing process).
  • The liquid is injected into the injured area and/or given intravenously.

"We recently traveled from Palm Springs to have our 15 y.o. pup receive specialized treatments for her arthritis from Doctor Gordon and his team at Arch Beach. We really appreciated his willingness to do the consult and procedure in the same day given our geographic challenges. In speaking with others in the reception area, we weren't the only ones who made the drive for the outstanding care here. Without exception, everyone we encountered in two visits was compassionate, gracious, and conscientious. I only wished we lived closer and this could be our full-time vet.We took note of how present Dr. Gordon is with each of his patients and their families, making it a point to check in with you, even if you're just there for a moment. Sadly, encountering folks who still really care about what they do is too rare these days; it was deeply appreciated. Thank you to the entire Arch Beach team, with love from Scout!"
